The Tesla Band’s namesake is the forgotten American scientist, Nikola Tesla. His life story is truly a David and Goliath story, as is the story of a lone third grade public school teacher in Michigan, who along with the Tesla Band is working toward bringing proper recognition to the man who gave the world AC electricity and radio.
In 1983, Mr. Wagner first learned the true story of the American scientist, Nikola Tesla, who had been a victim of historical revisionism by the media as well as the academic community since the 19th century.
He immediately began a campaign to promote, preserve, and honor Tesla’s memory by soliciting funds from the Tesla Band for the purchase of a bronze sculpture of the scientist for donation to the Smithsonian. But the Smithsonian’s curator promptly refused the bust, claiming he had no use for it.
Mr. Wagner then concluded that it might even be better to circumvent the Smithsonian by donating the bust to a major university. He then cast 18 additional duplicates of the first bust and has donated them all to major universities, making a total of 19 busts donated so far.
The Tesla Band fully endorses this effort and urges all readers to read the full story of Tesla’s struggle to bring power and radio to the world. Please buy our Nikola Tesla T-shirt. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of additional bust sculptures for donation to other major universities.
